The Perth Football Club was formed in 1899 and joined the West Australian Football Association (now the WAFL) later that year, in place of the Rovers Football Club who were unable to field a team. The club was initially based at the WACA Ground in East Perth, moving to Lathlain Park in Perth's south-eastern suburbs in 1959.

Perth won their first flag in 1907 but took nearly half a century to win their second, beating East Fremantle by two points in 1955. After the shift to Lathlain the Demons won three flags in a row between 1966 and 1968. The Dees then won back to back flags in 1976-77 but have struggled on-field since then, failing to qualify for finals since 1997.

The club's city zone includes the suburbs in Perth's south-eastern corridor such as Lathlain, Rivervale, Belmont, Cannington and Thornlie, while its country zone includes Northam, York, Cunderdin, Jurien Bay, Cervantes and Dongara.
