Plunkett was a former Norwood player who played with the club in the years 1896 -1901 & 1908 -1909. He captained the side from 1900 - 1903. He participated in 1901 SANFL Grand Final winning by 3 points. He received 'Best and Fairest' in 1903 and played two games for South Australia. Plunkett served with the 4th ACH (SA) 4th Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse, South Australia during the Boer War with teammate Horace MacFarlane. He was a private (2741). He played 16 games for the club and scored 9 goals
